Oral Hygiene Program and Its Evolution:
• In the year 2001, the College of Dentistry was established at Taipei Medical University, including the establishment of the Department of Oral Hygiene. • The Master's program in Dentistry (formerly the Institute of Oral Rehabilitation Medicine) provides advanced education opportunities for graduates of the Department of Oral Hygiene, with the Basic Dentistry group. • In the year 2011, approval was granted to establish a four-year undergraduate program, and enrollment began in the academic year 101.
The Department of Oral Hygiene at Taipei Medical University is a part of the College of Dentistry. It operates alongside the Department of Dentistry, the Master's and Ph.D. programs in Dentistry, the Department of Dental Technology, and the Master's program in Dental Technology.
The Department of Oral Hygiene at Taipei Medical University (In-Service Program) was established in 2001 as the first department of oral hygiene in the country, admitting graduates with specialized education. In 2012, a four-year daytime program was established, admitting high school graduates.
Teaching Objectives:
- Care for the oral health of the entire population and promote oral hygiene education.
- Strengthen the oral healthcare team, cultivate professional talents in clinical assistance, and assist in dental healthcare.
- Cultivate professionals in the research, teaching, and public health administration of oral hygiene.
- Foster professionals with dental medical and information management capabilities.
Features:
Dental hygienists are integral members of dental healthcare teams, a practice already implemented in countries such as Europe, America, and Japan. The establishment of this department aims to cultivate morally upright oral hygiene professionals. In addition to emphasizing students' character development, we provide education in humanities, social sciences, and professional knowledge and skills in healthcare. Our goal is to promote oral hygiene health to the general population and even disadvantaged groups overseas.
Development:
Our department offers foundational courses in oral medicine and public health with an emphasis on "oral health." Core courses include management and clinical oral care, enabling graduates to hold academic or administrative positions in the field of oral medicine (educational institutions, hospitals, public health agencies, oral hygiene, or dental facilities) with academic responsibility.

Oral Hygiene Science is a crucial discipline for overall human health. Healthy oral hygiene is essential at various age levels, contributing to a good diet, and promoting overall bodily health. The Department of Oral Hygiene is established within the medical university, allowing for the integration of interdisciplinary medical expertise. We aim to cultivate oral professionals that meet societal demands, contributing to various fields in health and medicine.
Graduates of our department will shoulder significant responsibilities in the formulation of oral hygiene policies, public health education promotion, clinical dental assistance, dental-related healthcare management, case management consultation, elderly long-term oral care, and talent development for the oral health industry. We welcome young individuals aspiring to make oral health medicine their lifelong pursuit to join this team. The addition of more enthusiastic youth will enhance the oral health care available to the people of Taiwan.
